Our popular CPD online safety course for school staff has been thoroughly updated for the 2023-24 academic year. Please see below for the change log of the updates and additions made.
Module 1:
- Updated to reference KCSIE 2023 throughout
- Removed summary slide on filtering and monitoring as covered in more detail in the presentation to reflect the focus on this topic in the updated KCSIE.
- 13 slides added to cover focus on filtering and monitoring in KCSIE 2023, providing reference to KCSE and DfE information and reflective scenarios.
- Questions added to end of module assessment to cover filtering and monitoring.
- Slide adapted to reflect updated DFE guidance on teaching online safety. Updated flashcard relating to recognising manipulation and persuasion techniques. Added flashcard relating to the protection of personal data.
- Removed obsolete reference to the delayed introduction of compulsory introductory of RSE teaching due to COVID disruptions.
Module 2:
- Updated link to Everyone’s Invited school listings (list updated in May 2022).
- New slide added with information about the NSPCC’s helpline ‘Report Abuse in Education’
- Removed reference to SWGfL’s Harmful Sexual Behaviour Support Service which was closed down in 2022.
Module 3:
- Updated statistics on usage of different social media platforms throughout module based on latest OSA research.
- Updated reference to NSPCC statistics on grooming which indicate Snapchat has overtaken Instagram as the platform used in the most grooming cases.
- Slide added to Instagram section covering the coroner’s report into the death of Molly Russell and issues around social media algorithms pushing inappropriate content.
- Information on Instagram parental controls updated to reflect new features launched in June 2023.
- Updated information and hyperlinks on the links between Snapchat and county lines gangs.
- Updated information on default privacy settings on TikTok.
- Slide added on reports linking TikTok to the sharing of misogynistic content.

- Updated all case studies of cyberattacks on schools to case studies from the past 12 months.
- Two new TRA case studies on inappropriate use of school equipment by staff.
- New TRA case studies on interacting with pupils through social media.
- Added new case study on historic tweets resulting in loss of jobs in education.
- Added mention to expanded reference to online checks of candidates being made in KCSIE 2023 (paragraph 221).
- Updated to a new TRA case study on communications with former pupils.
- Updated to a new TRA case study relating to making offensive comments to colleagues through technology.
